Memory (Abilene, Mysteries Log)

Postby Jakondite » Tue Jul 11, 2017 9:47 am

It was a relatively quiet evening. The parkside at night is an urban playground - literally. A place where people come to relax, to enjoy themselves. During the day, it's one of the more active locations - right up there with the Pier. A great place to meet people, to enjoy other people's company...

In truth, the night was much the same, but ... the element shifted. It was less a active, fun crowd and more a crowd which desired to use the shadows - for whatever reason. To hide a thing, to enjoy a thing, to imagine a thing. The night held many wonders and many terrors - but all these people, they were all puppets to a mad machine. They all worked in a specific way, because that's what they were supposed to do. What they had to do.

You, on the other hand - you are higher than that, aren't you? Blessed with the understanding of the nature of the world, you could see that no matter what each person thought, their lives were not their own. Free will was a lie - and a pathetic, obvious one at that. Every action we had was already preordained, preplanned.

It's the evening on a weekday. It's not a party night, but the parkside isn't empty regardless. All you have to do is look around to see the thing crowds. The homeless man who normally sits on the street side - driven off by the policce - now lays on one of the benches until another cop tells him he can't sleep there. The woody areas hide college kids off trying to enjoy themselves - or drug dealers, though those are usually actually on the road, two cars passing one another. It all seems very... predictable in a way, like everything works the way that it is supposed to.

Abilene
???
She felt a bit like she was in a zoo, almost. Come, stop by and see these sleepers scuttle and try to survive an unforgiving world designed to keep them from destroying everything else with their idiocy. Like any good researcher though, she went out on occasion to observe the sleepers in their habitats and examine their patterns in behavior, looking for signs of the pre-ordained fates as laid out by the Exarchs (unity in particular).

It's easy to find patterns in the way that people move. It's easy to figure out the way that things are supposed to be - especially as an Acanthus. You could literally see the way that the night might play out - nothing too particularly interesting, if all things are equal. You almost, almost don't notice the strange about the evening.

But your watching the world. Watching the way that things work. You can notice when you lose track of time. When you remember distinctly that there was a set of cars to the side of the road talking, but they've already both left and no track has been laid. When the homeless man was sitting there - but must have moved, because he's no longer there.

He wouldn't have moved on his own. There is throwup in front of where he had been sleeping. That wasn't there, last you remember.

The key point in this though is that you never felt the telltale sign of magical works being cast when this... whatever this was happened. Honestly, your not a hundred percent sure if it was just that you dozed off for a second, or if you somehow lost track of time and things happened in that span. But it's never happened before.
Postcognition:
Management:
0 | 07/11/2017 6:04 am "Abilene" has rolled an (Postcognition on self, +1 Reach instant, +1 reach to retain defense, +1 scrubbing+1 reach Advanced duration) Gnosis 2+Time2+Empathy3) roll (7 dice), getting 7, 4, 1, 10, 2, 10, 6, 9, 10, 1, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. "Abilene" has 4 successes.

Abilene
???
That was...strange. Jessica didn't like not being sure of things, so almost reflexively she flashed her hands in the mudra for her post-cognition rote to view the immediate past, altering the imago to allow her some awareness of the present as well. Now...what jut happened? Just a slip of her mind, or something more interesting?

You open yourself up to the passage of time, and immediately begin to scroll back. It's not a far trip back to examine, after all - and... wait. No - that can't be right. You take a few moments parsing between the information of the past. You scroll through it swiftly, scroll through it slowly, scroll through it in real time and...

Nothing. Or - that's inaccurate. The last... hour or so - maybe forty five minutes - you can't seem to recall. You know that time didn't skip - it's easy enough to utilize time to know the exact quantity of seconds that span between there and now to know that time has passed, but you also know that every time you look at one particular 'block', more time passes. You can only assume as much time passes for you to look over the time and try to contemplate the gap.

You feel something burning on your hand - it's not a magical sensation, so much as a dulled pain. Looking at it in the current time will reveal that your hand is bleeding - your own handwriting, with your pen, says 'Memory'.

Abilene
???
Jessica felt a deep shiver go down her back when she saw what she carved into her hand. "Fuck," she quietly cursed before she pointed her pen at herself and tried to put together a new spell.
Perfect Memory:
Management:
0 | 07/11/2017 6:30 am "Abilene" has rolled an Improvised Perfect Memory (+1 reach instant, +1 reach advanced duration, -1 mana) Gn2+Time2+Willpower 3 roll (7 dice), getting 9, 3, 6, 5, 8, 1, 8, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. "Abilene" has 3 successes.

As you cast the spell, you might very well expect to feel your magic clash with whatever effect might be there. The fact that it does not tells you a few possible things. Either, you didn't clash - the memories are not there, and rather than being cloaked or otherwise they are simply gone, in all cases where you viewed that time. Another possible theory is that your magic did face off against this - but you, of course, could not remember it. Could in be that encasing an effect? What could -possibly- be worth hiding that much?

You do remember every detail about this - you remember the moments passing, your investigating the matter - and your forgetting. But the 'what' you happen to be forgetting? It's not there.

Trying to investigate this matter - whatever it was, whyever it was - was, in many ways, like trying to examine dark matter. The theory was that it existed, and that you had to look for clues based on the way the world was interacted with it. You wrote down at one point Memory - that was your message to yourself, but why not explain what was being forgotten? Why not try to write down the event that occurred so you could read about it and figure things out?

Why did looking backwards magically still effect you, now?

Abilene
???
Right now, Abilene was caught somewhere between utterly frighted and extremely frustrated. Was her memory being actively manipulated, or was this some sort of passive effect...and why wasn't she sensing it with her sight? She opened her senses to the Arcadian forces as she started walking in...any direction really, in case it was localized. Fuck, now what, she thought. It seemed like something was preventing memories from forming, all short term memories fading away after a few seconds. Did she have paper on her? She searched through her purse for a notebook while considering what other spells she could put up. A shield for now, as she tried to write down what her mind wouldn't keep.
Mental Shield:
Management:
0 | 07/11/2017 6:53 am "Abilene" has rolled an Improvised Mental Shield (GN2+Mind2) 1 reach instant, -1 mana roll (4 dice), getting 1, 7, 6, 8, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. "Abilene" has 1 success.

Looking through your purse, you might begin to realize that it's very likely you already looked for a piece of notebook to write with - that's why you wrote it on your hand. You might even notice your hand has evidence of more writing on it than the word memory - but the other information has been 'licked off' and erased, for whatever reason.

Abilene
???
Her soul was being taxed, but thankfully she still had her postcognition spell up (though the mental shield needed to be refined beyond the current hasty imago to something that would last longer than a few seconds). She checked her hand to read through what was once on there.

Oh, her phone! She could record messages on it, rather than keep carving shit into her hand. Unless her phone was ALSO affected, which would probably be the case with how bad her luck was...either the Exarchs were displeased with her tonight, or the Fallen World was being rather rebellious here in...some shitty park in this shitty city.

It's not that you can't, of course - like all things of this nature you entirely can. The problem is that the information in which you glean you... ultimately do not remember. Likely why you erased it to begin with in the first place - no point in keeping around something that will continue to eat away at pieces of your mind, stealing valuable time from you. It seemed that whatever was doing this, also effected attempts to explain what was doing this.

Abilene
???
Abilene gripped her pen like a dagger as she considered her options. She couldn't solve this without figuring out how to retain information. She huffed as she canceled her mental spells, leaving only her postcognition sight up. One or two more attempts, she promised herself, and then she'd book it and inform her superiors...assuming she'd remember enough to give an actual report of some kind.

The problem was memory...but an erosion of it, or more precisely a prevention of what should happen due to some static effect that somehow wasn't being sensed to her, implying that this phenomena was somehow "natural". Either way, she was being changed by an outside force...so what could she do to nullify that influence? Mind spells didn't seem to block it...perhaps removing herself from the influence of Time itself might help, to temporary become a static object in a chronological sense.

She did know a rote for this...at the least this phenomenon was good practice, assuming she'd remember it, she thought.

Veil of Moments:
Veil of Moments (1 R Instant, 1R Advanced Duration, 1 R ignore persistent conditions, 1 R willpower regain)
Management:
0 | 07/11/2017 7:32 am "Abilene" has rolled an High speech 2 + Gn2+Time2+Investigation 2 roll (8 dice), getting 4, 10, 7, 5, 6, 1, 7, 2, 5, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. "Abilene" has 1 success.

(Mental shield and perfect memory canceled)

The Veil of Moments is a beautiful spell - in that moment, you can almost feel the sensation of time stop to have it's hold on you - at least for a moment. All things stop - your age, the sharpness of pain in your hand - healing too. Did it work on memories that were robbed of you, even when those memories don't seem like they are being taken away by a magical force that you could detect?

There were more reasons than 'it's not magical' to define why you would not sense it, after all. It could, very simply, also be veiled.

Then there is the other question. This is an interesting subject to report - but is reporting a weakness? Would it provide you with the answers you needed, or clues into the direction of the answers to this Mystery? A risk to which can be used against you? Would not be just as much a risk - to you or to others?

Abilene
???
Right...now that she was in a temporal quarantine, she could continue with her investigation into this annoying puzzle. For starters...how had her mind been affected?

Her soul needed the break, she decided as she canceled the postcognition spell. The Arcana used in that were more familiar than the Mind Arcana (for now), and she didn't want her self-check to be disrupted.
Mind Scan:
(Postcog dropped)
Management:
0 | 07/11/2017 8:20 am "Abilene" has rolled an Improvied Mind Scan (HS 2 + GN2 + Mind 2) roll (6 dice), getting 8, 7, 7, 7, 8, 4, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. "Abilene" has 2 successes.

As you cast the spell, the knowledge of what exactly is occurring fills your mind. Well, not what is occurring, but what occurred. Best that it seems, during the times that you were looking back towards - and when you were looking back - your memories do not exist. It's hard to say if you formed memories, and they deleted themselves, or if they never reached your long term memory banks. The effect seems to be somehow related to the details of the event. It is important to understand that this is -not- an effect that is placed inside your brain, conditioning you not to remember - instead, it's more like the very concept which you are trying to remember itself cannot be remembered, witnessed, or observed.

Abilene
???
"Finally, some damned progress," Abilene cursed to herself as she determined the nature of her missing time. Not that it helped ease the chills on her spine, considering that, rather than a more traditional memory altering supernatural phenomenon, this was something more conceptual.

Interesting...scary as fuck as she took a deep breath to remain composed, but interesting.

Ultimately, investigating the matter took time - and, though you didn't remember much of the time that you investigated, your body very evidently did. You'd been out of here for hours, and you were starting to get tired. If anyone had bothered watching -you-, they'd probably wonder what was taking so long.

The best medicine for this kind of exhaustion was to give the body rest. Allow it rest, and you might find a clue in the future.

Current theme: Silent Hill: Homecoming- Something's Out There
Current Spells:Veil of Moments (1 R Instant, 1R Advanced Duration, 1 R ignore persistent conditions, 1 R willpower regain)
Mage Sight: Active (Time, Fate, Mind, -2 to non magical actions)

Sooner or latter, she would have returned here, she told herself. This...entity or phenomenon that couldn't be observed was the kind of mystery that both presented a grave threat to Abilene, but also an object lesson on impossible concepts in action, the kind of thing that could provide valuable secrets to a mage. And Secrets meant power. Abilene was all about some power.
The fact that figuring out this mystery could get her into the Elite was a pretty damn good motivator as well. It was...honestly Abilene thought it was a dumb and plain name for a Pylon, but considering the possible perks such a position could grant, she would be all about that plain name lifestyle if that's what it meant.

She smiled to herself as she entered the park. She had isolated herself from the timeline earlier in hopes that would help her preserve her memory and allow her to better retain the observations she made. She also had her phone with a few new notetaking apps and a good ol plain notebook and pens in her purse. Hopefully this time she wouldn't need to resort to writing notes on her arms again. Hopefully.

After entering the park and making sure there wasn't any obvious obstructions to her investigation, like runners or bums, she opened her senses and her third eye to the supernal world. The argent thorns of Time started to crystallize in her vision as they twisted around the corners of her eyes, and she started modeling people and objects in her mind's eye as entire lines that lead from the past to the frayed and disorganized future rather than the simple points of the present. The air was shimmering with the ripples and currents of Fate which made the thorns and lines shift and ebb. Lastly, with an expenditure of mana from her pattern, she could now also sense the colors and emotional auras of any thoughtforms and thinking beings in her sight.

She began to walk further into the park with a careful pace, mostly because the strong sensations of feeling and seeing the outlines of the true shapes of reality could be a bit distracting. There was also hesitation that Jessica had to fight through with a nip to her lower lip.

Mysteries:

The parkside is quiet today - much like it was the other day. The day when the memory hole in your head arrived - the day when the Mystery showed itself. You of course have not sensed such a Mystery yet again - but you knew that returning to that time would bring you back to the Mystery, back to the blank spot - and of course, it would earn you new blank spots in which to gain.

Abilene has rolled an Postcognition (Gn2+Time2+Empathy3+Order1+willpower3) 1R instant, 1R scene, 1R Scrub, 1R Aware, -2d for potency +1 roll (9 dice), getting 9, 3, 9, 10, 3, 10, 2, 10, 9, 5, 8, 4, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has 7 successes.

Abilene

Abilene mimed wiping away the mud of the present to witness that strangeness once again, since it didn't seem to be around here at the moment. She wondered if that was a good or not for her investigation (and her well being), and she adjusted her imago to allow for stimuli from the present to be felt as well, in case it wandered by again.

As far as she could tell, the spell was perfect in every way as it drew her senses backwards.

Mysteries

The time blurs through the events - once more - and this time, you weave the spell in a way that's... kind of accidental? You weave it in a manner of patterns and subjectivity, rather than a direct recollection of the past. You see the time, a symbol for you represented there - and symbols for others. You see another symbol though - it moves, floating through the past. The Symbol is Forget, wrapped up in a hard wire of symbols that make less sense the more sense they make. During the time you forget, the Symbol seems to engage with you - more symbols for communication - before moving on a few hours later.

Abilene

Abilene hurried to write all of this down as best she could. A symbol of forgetfulness, wrapped up in an exoskeleton of...of what?
Jessica sucked in a sharp breath and focused her mage sight. She turned her hand, using those neurons to will the vision to replay her meeting with the symbol-creature. As the symbols seemed to revolve around the Mind, she used what she knew of that Arcanum to study the vision, and she released a bit of mana into the air to read.
(Spending one WP for Scrutiny, Using Mind, 1 mana for +1 success upon success on the initial roll)

:
Abilene has rolled an Gnosis 2 + Mind 2 roll (4 dice), getting 4, 5, 10, 4, 2, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has 1 success.

Mysteries

As you flood time itself with the symbols, those symbols warp in a way that burns at your mind - searing it away. It has no physical effect on you, but it hurts to read through this - or rather, it's greatly discomforting. They don't make much sense either, they just hurt to keep looking over.

Abilene

"Damnit," she whispered as she tried to make sense of this resonance.
:
Abilene has rolled an Gnosis 2 + Mind 2 roll (4 dice), getting 2, 3, 3, 2, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has failed the roll.

Abilene has rolled an Gnosis 2 + Mind 2 roll (4 dice), getting 3, 4, 10, 3, 3, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has 1 success.

Abilene has rolled an Gnosis 2 + Mind 2+Willpower3 roll (7 dice), getting 3, 10, 10, 3, 8, 3, 7, 8, 7, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has 4 successes.

Abilene has rolled an REVELATION! Gn2+Mind2+WP3-Opac3 roll (4 dice), getting 1, 9, 3, 1, with a difficulty of 8 on a 10 sided die. Abilene has 1 success.

Mysteries

As you read through the weave of the Mystery, one thing you get from this is very simple: This is an Exarchal Mystery.

Abilene

Jessica gasped, and realized that she had never gasped like that before, except for that night she made love to The Admirer.

There at the center of the resonance was the rune for the Seers. She was in the presence of one of her gods.

"Holy shit!"
Mysteries

Well - of that one couldn't be sure. Only that the Mystery itself was Exarchal in nature. That could, in theory, mean a great many things, but now you at least know it was a closer kind of mystery than you might have otherwise expected.

Abilene

Whatever, Jessica quipped to that internal voice blabbing how it's only related to them, not one of the Almighty Tyrants walking among them.

But it COULD be!

Abilene shut her eyes and closed off her supernal senses, relieving her own mind and soul of the burdens of reading Truth for a time, so she could write down what she had learned of this entity. Record the facts first, she told herself. The theories can come latter
